Papel Amate is handcrafted paper, made of tree bark and is still produced according to the old maya- and aztec rituals by the Otomi indians in Central Mexico. After the bark of the Mori-tree is cooked, the fibres have to be torn apart. On a wooden board the separated fibres get beaten with a stone until one felted & homogeneous surface is reached. The obtained paper is dried in the sun and then goes directly to the shaman of the village, who traditionally sanctifies the material with some positive vibes. In the second stage of the refinement process the Papel Amate receives a beautiful mexican vintage-print and by this becomes a universal decoration with lots of character and sweet patina. Papel Amate is available as postcard, magnet & art print.
