Zeny Fuentes is the oldest son of Epifamio Fuentes, a famous woodcarver from San Martin Tilcajete near by Oaxaca. Prepared with the great knowledge of his father, this very sympatric young man is reckoned today as one of the best newcomers and shows already a unique style. The woodcarving tradition in the area of Oaxaca goes way back beyond the 19th century. Different families carved masks and animals for religious rituals and as good souls to protect their children from bad dreams and dark energies. Today it remained the same and as we learned, the woodcarver feels what kind of animal is captured in a piece of wood and just helps it to emerge. Used is traditionally the copal wood, a very light and soft wood which can be found exclusively in the area of Oaxaca. Due to the consistence of the wood it is possible to create the fine and filigree Alebrijes, which represent your animal soul mate. |
