This impressive 30-cm-tall Santa Muerte figurine is cast in resin and has been dressed in an elegant robe with great attention to detail. The black robe, skillfully attached to the figurine, is made of a thin synthetic fabric interspersed with small reflective black dots. The Santa Muerte figurine offers all-encompassing personal protection and is effective even against black magic.
Our Santa Muerte figurine is decorated with carefully applied silver trim, fabric flowers, stones, a small mirror, and the customary fake $100 bill along with plastic coins to attract money. The scythe consists of a wooden handle and a resin blade. Details such as the owl above the feet, the scales, and the hand holding the globe have been elegantly highlighted with careful hand-painting in gold and silver; the figure is crowned by an expressive skull. The overall craftsmanship of the decoration, as well as details such as the seeds embedded in transparent synthetic resin at the base of Santa Muerte’s feet, prove that we are dealing here neither with soulless Mexican tourist trinkets nor with the Chinese goods prevalent on eBay and Amazon, but with highly authentic Santa Muerte merchandise. We source our figures from the time-honored workshop of Tia Sabrina, who has been running a small Santa Muerte specialty shop at the famous Witches’ Market in Mexico City for many years alongside her niece and supplies her figures to many other specialty shops throughout Mexico.
The cult of Santa Muerte has tens of thousands of followers across all segments of Mexican society - of all the folk saints, the Saint of Death enjoys by far the greatest popularity. The Catholic Church classifies the cult of Santa Muerte as a pagan ritual and even suppresses it in many places, but this does not deter her followers from worshipping the skeletal woman with a scythe at countless small shrines throughout the country for love, health, happiness, financial and professional success, and personal protection. Santa Muerte differs from other Mexican folk saints primarily in that she is known by the name Mictecacihuatl as an ancient Aztec goddess of death and ruler of the underworld. For this reason, and given their classification of the Santa Muerte cult as a pagan ritual, Catholics must confront the accusation that they banished an ancient Aztec deity here in the course of the conquest and Christianization of Mexico.
