When we discovered this unusual religious accessory at the witch market in Mexico City, it was love at first sight and we knew straight away that we had found a very special new piece for our carefully curated speciality section on La Santa Muerte. Let's start at the top: braided cord in many different neon colours interacts with stately wooden beads to form a sturdy ring on which the Santa Muerte amulet can either be hung at home or carried in the hand if it is to be used as a ceremonial utensil. At the bottom of the ring, the neon strings extend by approx. 30 cm and are used to attach a variety of small decorative objects and lucky charms such as beads, skulls, hearts, crosses, peace signs, various milagros and bells to attract the attention of Santisima Muerte. All of the decorative objects are of very good fashion jewellery quality and have been carefully attached to the cords with integrated tabs or gold-coloured wire. The 14 cm tall Santa Muerte statuette made of transparent resin enchants with colourful sprinkles inside to match the rest and is of course also equipped with the obligatory seeds in the base.
With regard to the various decorative items, minor deviations from the photos shown are possible - sometimes there are a few more skulls, sometimes a few more hearts or other things, but basically it is the same mix of materials in any case ... As always, you will receive hand-picked quality.
The cult of Santa Muerte has thousands and thousands of followers across society in Mexico, and of all the popular saints, the saint of death enjoys by far the greatest popularity. The Catholic Church classifies the cult of Santisima Muerte as a pagan ritual and even suppresses it in many places, but this does not stop her disciples from worshipping the bony scythe woman at countless small shrines throughout the country for love, happiness, health, financial and professional success and personal protection. Santa Muerte differs from the other Mexican folk saints above all by the fact that she is known as Mictecacihuatl, the ancient Aztec goddess of death and ruler of the underworld. For this reason, and in view of their classification of the Santa Muerte cult as a pagan ritual, Catholics have to deal with the accusation that they have banished an ancient Aztec deity in the course of the conquest and Christianisation of Mexico.
