It may sound odd, but the most colourful Mexican skulls are currently being produced in the state of Guerrero, which is one of the regions with the most victims in years of ongoing drug war. This mischievous looking little skull has been manufactured from hard fired ceramics by skillful potter's hands. The skull has been hand-painted with bright colors and savvy bronze brushstrokes form a delicate pattern of ornaments, while the ornaments on the back of the skull show a bird motif.
What makes this skull really special is the glazing, which seals the fine hand painting and makes it possible to place the little skull for the Dia de los Muertos event on the cemetery even on these rainy November days at our latitude. You might as well like this cheekily grinning Mexican skull as a handy and inexpensive alternative to handmade sugar skulls on your Day of the Dead altar, if you can’t find the time to do them yourself.
