A Mexican skull is generally quite a colorful affair. This minimalist design object here proves that things can be different and impresses with its breathtaking design in soft earth tones. The raw material of red and light brown clay is presented in its purest form in this skull and is neither painted nor glazed, but simply finished to beautiful perfection.
The highlight of these skulls are the highly detailed flower decorations. Each individual leaf of the decoration was formed by hand and applied to the still moist clay skull, after which the patterns were worked in with meditative precision using a fine spike. After a short drying process of a few hours in the sun, the pieces were finally fired at 800° in the kiln. The manufactory where the Fernando clay skull was made is very much to our taste: an old family business that is one of the pioneers of this type of detailed ceramics and is now run by the second generation of children. They have successfully taken the family legacy into new territory with the highest quality standards and mainly supply museum stores in the USA and some Hi End boutiques in Mexico.
