This magnificent resin Alebrije skull captivates the viewer with an intoxicating base of vibrant neon colors. Over this stretches a web of fine lines, adorned with spiders, lizards, and beetles, meticulously applied with a fine brush. The lower jaw of this one-of-a-kind piece is movable.
Alebrijes are enchantingly colorful, hand-painted wooden mythical creatures that have become one of the most popular symbols of Mexican folk art in recent decades. The source of Alebrije art lies in Arrazola, a small village near Oaxaca de Juarez, where countless families earn their living by carving and painting highly detailed Alebrijes. One of these families with a long tradition and a legendary portfolio of alebrije artisans is the Jimenez family. Their youngest son, Alejandro, absorbed his parents’ skills and painting techniques from a very young age and experimented in the family workshop as a child, but as a teenager, with a spray can in one hand and a skateboard in the other, he turned his attention to the street art scene that was becoming increasingly prominent in the streets of Oaxaca. Now in his mid-20s, he is still active there, but has also discovered skulls, on which he fuses the best of both worlds.
