Tree of Death

All customers who have ever visited our Berlin showroom are familiar with this impressive piece, which has been the centerpiece of our altar in a recurring design for many years. Concepción Aguilar hides a dizzying variety of details in strong colors in the opulent, three and a half kilogram clay sculpture and creates an imaginatively designed animal park alongside the pale center of the scenery.

This sculpture is adorned with 4 owls, 2 lizards, 2 snakes as well as a red bird and a butterfly on top of the cacti. All of the animals are painted in great detail and have been embedded in the figure with thick wire or mounted directly onto it. The larger lizard at the bottom of the base sits on a small protrusion that has been beautifully carved out of the body. 

The base of the Tree of Death is a solid clay plinth measuring approx. 20 cm in diameter. Thanks to its finely crafted structure and clever coloring, this base looks deceptively similar to wood. The figure grows out of the top of the base and the lower cactus leaves grow behind its back. The second level of the cactus parts, perfectly designed right down to the flowers, has been skillfully embedded in the lower leaves using strong wire.
