The Florist

A good pound of red Mexican clay served as the starting material for this little masterpiece by José Juan Aguilar. The hem of the Florist´s dress also forms the stable base for the sculpture - inside this base is the artist's signature, carved into the clay, which has been left raw here. 

Each of the white flowers in the magnificent bouquet has been placed with meticulous finesse and is framed on all sides by delicate foliage. This delicately curved green foliage continues upwards and ensures that the expressive Trademark Skull with its highly detailed structure is perfectly showcased. Jose Juan has completely dispensed with the wire usually used for the Aguilars to attach the flowers, which makes the construction of this sculpture particularly clever but also very elaborate. 

As always with this artist, the painting leaves nothing to be desired and enchants with delicate transitions and fine lines in the typical washed-out color tones of The Aguilar clan. The final result is highly skilled Day of the Dead art in museum quality - elegant perfection, immortalized in a proud little monument to the market women from our second home town of Oaxaca de Juarez.
