The predestined place for our magnificent little devil El Diablito is clearly the rear-view mirror of the car, where it sets very special accents as an unusual handmade accessory and delights with diabolical dances.
The devil's hips, body and head are made of skillfully modeled papier-mâché. The limbs and tail are made of wire, coated with a thin layer of papier-mâché and attached to the body with wire loops. After applying the dignified black hand-painting to the red base, Diablito's surface was made suitable for everyday use with a thin layer of matt varnish.
Working with papier-mâché has a long tradition in Mexico. Paper fibers, water and paste are processed into a viscous paste that can then be sculpted in a variety of ways. Our little devil defines the high art of this endangered subgenre of Mexican arts and crafts - there are only a small handful of manufactories in the country that are still involved in the time-consuming and labor-intensive process of creating these kinds of devils and skeletons from papier-mâché.
